How to Keep Going When Everything Feels Heavy

People often choose to hear only what they want to, but today I’m going to tell you something you might not want to hear.

You can do hard things… even when you do not want to, even when you are tired of being the strong one, even when everything in you is screaming for a break, the way a wrestler hits the mat to declare they’ve had enough.

I get that feeling. After my 14-year-old daughter died, I used to call the hardships that happened after she passed the dump truck. It felt like life kept backing up and dumping more on me. I was raw to every challenge because I believed I had already been handed the ultimate blow.

I know the kind of heavy where it feels like you are walking through wet cement, where every step is a negotiation with yourself. The heaviness does not just live in your mind. It seeps into your bones. You now have to work at happiness more than you ever had to. The world keeps spinning while you stand there, wondering how you are supposed to keep up.

But listen closely. There is still a part of you, small, stubborn, and fierce, that whispers, “Do not stop.” That is the part I am speaking to today.

1. Tell the truth before you aim for “I’m fine.”

Let’s stop pretending.

If you are down seven to zero today, call it what it is. You are not broken for saying I am not okay right now.

That is not a weakness. It is the truth, and truth is where healing begins.

There are days when you don’t feel ‘fine,’ and ‘faking fine’ does not lighten the load. It buries it, but using it as an intention, to be ‘fine’, works because if you can recognize that you’re not ‘fine’, that is a wonderful step towards winning that very moment.

2. Win the Next Five Minutes

Forget about conquering the week. Heck, forget about conquering the day.
When life feels unbearably heavy, shrink your world down to what you can control in the next five minutes. Drink the water. Open the window. Send that one text you’ve been avoiding.

Five minutes is survivable. And when you stack enough survivable moments together, you build momentum without even realizing it.

3. Anchor to Something Bigger

Sometimes the “why” that keeps you moving isn’t about you at all.

It’s about the people who love you. It’s about the future you haven’t met yet. It’s about the quiet promise you made to yourself that this, whatever this is, will not be the thing that breaks you.

When my legs felt too heavy to stand, I thought of the people who still needed me standing. That was enough to keep my motor running.

4. Catch the Lies in Your Head

Your mind will try to convince you that you can’t do this. It will tell you it’s pointless, hopeless, too late.

Catch those lies.

Interrupt them with the truth: I’ve faced storms before. I didn’t think I’d make it then either… but I did.

That’s not blind optimism, it’s proof of your own resilience. And proof matters.

Heck, I got through childbirth saying a mantra over and over again, and that was with zero drugs.  Mantras work!

5. Keep a Thread of Joy in Reach

When life feels dark, joy can seem out of place. But joy is not betrayal, it’s rebellion.
It’s choosing to grab a little piece of light even when the shadows are loud. It’s that song you play on repeat, the friend who makes you laugh until your ribs hurt, the sunset you stop to notice.

Those moments don’t erase the heaviness, and they definitely don’t make you less loyal to the pain, but they remind you that the heaviness is not the whole story.

Here’s What I Need You to Know

You don’t have to do this perfectly. You don’t have to leap forward. You just have to keep moving, even if it’s an inch at a time.

There will be a day, maybe sooner than you think, when you’ll look back and realize that the weight you thought would crush you… became the thing that built you.

Until then, keep going.
Not because it’s easy.
Not because you’re not tired.
But because you are worth what’s on the other side of this.

With love,

Dena
